UPDATE: SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will help investigate the cause of a fire that heavily damaged the Marktplatz building on the Wurstfest grounds in New Braunfels. It started around 7:30 Thursday night in a booth in the food court area of Wurstfest and spread to the roof. The fire was extinguished, but it flared up again around 6 Friday morning.
” They immediately began attacking that fire by pulling back the metal roof and then attacking it with water and firefighting foam, which is a soap-based material,” said Ferguson.
Firefighters from New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, Cibolo, Schertz, Seguin and San Marcos battled the blaze.
“The Marktplatz area has the most significant damage with smoke, fire and water damage,” said Ferguson. He told KTSA News that the iconic Wursthalle building sustained smoke and heat damage, but is structurally sound.
The Comal River is temporarily closed to recreational activity because of the fire.
“Mostly because of the runoff from fighting the fire with the soot and firefighting foam making its way into the river, we decided to close the Comal for the day,” he said.
The investigation continues into the cause of the fire. There were no injuries.
Wurstfest ended its ten-day run last Sunday, November 10.
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – Fire has significantly damaged buildings on the grounds of Wurstfest at New Braunfels. It started around 7:30 Thursday night at Marktplatz and reignited Friday morning.
Smoke could be seen for miles when the fire started again Friday morning. It appears much of the roof of Marktplatz has collapsed. Wursthalle sustained smoke damage, but the major fire damage was to Marktplatz.
No reports of injuries. Several area fire companies will be on the scene for most of the day to make sure that the fire does not reignite again.
