The San Antonio Spurs will tip off their 2017-18 regular season campaign on October 18, at home against Houston native Jimmy Butler and the reloaded Minnesota Timberwolves. The opening night matchup represents Butler’s first meaningful game for Minnesota, and should offer Spurs enthusiasts a much anticipated introduction to key free agent acquisition Rudy Gay.
In addition to Butler, the Timberwolves added stalwarts Jeff Teague, Taj Gibson, and Jamal Crawford, to a stacked roster that still features Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. San Antonio also added some fresh faces to their lineup via the NBA Draft, with promising rookies Derrick White and Jaron Blossomgame, and from overseas in wildcards Brandon Paul and Joffrey Lauvergne.
The Spurs will be rocking new uniforms for their opening night showdown with the Timberwolves courtesy of Nike. San Antonio unveiled the white Association Edition and black Icon Edition uniforms on Friday morning with two additional variants still on the way. The sleek designs do away with the silver outline around the team name on the jersey and include the franchise’s new basketball shaped logo on the shorts.
According to Nike, “The Alpha Yarns-and-recycled polyester jerseys each contain materials from approximately 20 recycled PET bottles and wick moisture 30 percent faster than current league uniforms, while improved designs around the armhole, neck and side seams allow for ease of player movement.”
Spurs faithful still holding out for Fiesta themed jerseys should note that one of the two remaining uniforms is touted to represent the San Antonio community, while the other will focus on the “athlete’s mindset.” A Classic Edition is also in the works for eight iconic NBA franchises, to be revealed in the fall.
